"Looks more like a will-o-wisp if you ask me." Jake then commented, only slightly surprised by the outcome. He had assumed it was a disguise, but he didn't realize it was another creature entirely. "So. I take it your name is Charcoal, then?" He moved a little closer to the ball of light, simultaneously dousing his fireball as he moved. "What are you doing here? Trying to scare away burglars?"

Charcoal the fairy seemed angry, but it was hard to see without being able to clearly see her facial expressions. "Grrr! How dare you insult me by comparing me to those ghastly Wisps!"
Aqua frowned, lowering her guard. "Sorry, its kinda hard to see your figure in this lighting." Fairies humanoid were hard to see past their glowing bodies sometimes.
"You better be sorry!" Charcoal exclaimed. She then focused back on Jake. "Not that its anything to you lot, you who killed Master Ignus."
Aqueena seemed very annoyed. "Dont mind her outbursts. She is the former Sage of Fire, Ignus' assistant."
"How dare you refer to him in such a way. You have no respect for the dead!" Charcoal said, sounding upset.

"Respect has to be earned before it can be lost." Jake then noted to Charcoal. "Seeing as he had no one's respect for his... misdeeds, I don't see how we could react any differently." Jake rolled his eyes. "And aren't you being the disrespectful one? Masquerading as a dead man. You ought to be ashamed of yourself!" He shook his head, berating the fairy for its blunder. "Even going so far as to try and expel a Sage with your trickery." It was a little odd to see Jake annoyed, but he was already having a problem with Charcoal.

"You really are just like the rest! You all judge him by what you saw his actions as. You never knew him, or his heart! No one ever cared to learn the truth. You all just labeled him a traitor and other horrible things!" Charcoal was saying some things that didn't really make since with the information everyone had. But then...her wings started to droop as Jake scolded her, surprisingly. Her light began to dim, showing a small person with tan skin, red hair, and a small red dress. She looked distraught. "He...he was my Sage. I would never disrespect him...He...his death left an impact...I've...been trying to fill in as him so people wouldn't panic with no Sage...Some people still depended on his return on Terra 4...I...I didn't know what to do..." She seemed highly emotional.
"I've heard fairies were very emotional creatures, but I've never seen them like this myself..." Aqua mumbled, mostly directed to Jake.
Aqueena frowned slightly, feeling for Charcoal due to her emotional state. "Charcoal, I feel for you and your state, and I'm sorry you felt you needed to take on this task alone...But that doesn't excuse what's been done by Ignus. His actions truly harmed the Order of the Sages and the people he was to reside over."
Charcoal looked annoyed. "The Order? Peh!...You don't know anything about what he did for you, or his people..."

"Then, by all means, enlighten us, rather than make snide comments to us." Jake then noted, still a little bit annoyed. He was, however, intrigued. It was not like he knew Ignus personally, and if he was actually doing some good somewhere, then some extra help was probably sorely needed there. He nodded to Aqua's comment, but he wasn't about to excuse her just because she was a fairy, or whatever.

Charcoal didn't seem happy, but found Jake's willingness to listen refreshing. Aqueena sighed slightly. "I agree. If you have something your willing to say, I'm willing to listen."
"I don't even know if I want to talk to such people that turned their backs on a fellow member of the same Order...but I'll tell them. Listen if you want." Charcoal said. She then focused more on Aqua and Jake. "They all call Master Ignus a traitor because he helped the Ruins Master, Runic. But he was just doing the best he could...The rest of them all had training and experience from past Sages or Elementals, but Ignus was alone. He tried his best to do for his people what his own lacked, because of that witch Sati..." She paused, floating around, looking at the old buildings. "When the Sages were imprisoned, Ignus had it bad. His family was stranded without him on Terra 4, and he was left to try and take care of all the Fire Humans when he couldn't even leave this mountain. He had me try and gather those hurt by the war, and we tried to keep them together and safe...We had mountain communities all over this mountain, but over time Ignus knew he wouldn't be able to sustain them and help them all. So he struck a deal with Runic. He'd openly serve him and help him with his conquest of earth, and with that alliance he could move more freely again."
"So he went against the rules in this betrayal. How does that change anything?" Aqueena said, sounding stern.
"He broke that rule to try and help his people, and his family!" Charcoal outbursted again, before trying to calm back down. "He spent...over 400 years trying to think of something...abandoned by 'The Order'...not knowing if his own Terra or family was ok...He was afraid for them...When the fire humans left the mountains, he had nothing he could even do anymore..." Charcoal glared at Aqueena. "And he did it for all your people too. Why else do you think Ruinc started inlisting you Sages, and you were given more freedom? That's because Ignus lied for you all. He said you'd all fall in line and help him take over the Demon Realms after Earth fell...Dont tell me you didn't make use of his 'Betrayal'..."
Aqueena looked to the side, unable to keep eye contact. Aqua looked saddened though. "That...does explain why the Sages fought us a few times, and how Sages like Magneus and Nightshade helped us before...But to be all alone like that for so long..."

Jake listened carefully to Charcoal's explanation. By the end of it, he shook his head. "That's great and all, doing the best he could for his people. But Runic - or Lareo, rather - was defeated a decade ago. He had plenty of time to explain this himself, rather than keep up the façade afterwards. I understand that he was held for an unimaginably long time against his will; I won't pretend that I'd know what I would do in that situation." He looked a little bit... guarded. "But I should have heard these words from his mouth, not yours." Jake frowned. "But, I've heard them. It doesn't change anything, though. Even with his 'betrayal', Fire Humans are as dispersed as any other Powered Human. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy they lived, considering I'm one of them. But unity is what was needed."

Charcoal took in what Jake spoke about involving Lareo. It wasn't surprising. "Funny how even in his death, Magneus still took the side of his friend over his fellow Sage...Ignus and I were forced to go on the run after what happened. The Sages didn't want to hear him, and without the Master Sage, they were just gonna seal him away for however long they decided. Ignus argued that there wasn't time to argue among themselves, but the Sages didn't see it that way. So we fled the Terra to try and directly help people effected by what happened, and to try and find his missing family...Turns out Terra 2 got real busy after that, so we were able to stay out of their sights for a while..."
Aqua looked worried. She didn't want to argue the mortality of things. "Did he find them? I hope he was able to help someone."
Charcoals wings drooped again, as she looked mournful. "After a while...he found out they were dead...He couldn't find them for so long, and when he finally did, it was just a grave of his wife's...So we spent some time trying to get Terra 4s Fire Humans back together, since no new Sage had been appointed..." She then looked to Jake. "I'd rather him be the one to tell you...but dead men can't tell tales, as they say..." Charcoal cast a slight glare at Aqueena. "Bet that worked out real nice for the Order, didn't it? The trash took itself out, and it took care of the long standing problem with Sati too."
Aqueena glared back. "It was not a matter of 'taking out the trash', Charcoal. We don't think so lightly of people."
"Before or after he did that for you? Because I heard Sati got off scott free with everything, when all of this was her fault to begin with! And you all just place the blame on Ignus! If it wasn't for him, Sati and Xernus would've had free rign, and no one would've known until it was too late!" Charcoal exclaimed.
"No, he would've been held until the Master Sage was free once again. You're putting words in my mouth, as well as the other Sages." Aqueena sternly responded.

Jake looked... very displeased with this situation. How was he supposed to comment about something he was not involved in in the slightest? "My condolences for them. I'm sure that weighed heavily on his soul, not being there for her." He gave a light sigh. "What is the status of the Fire Humans on... Terra 4 now?" Jake was not used to talking about Terrae. But it was getting increasingly likely that he was going to have to start getting used to it.

Charcoal continued to look very troubled. Aqua wasn't taking sides, but she felt for the little fairy. She offered her arm to her, as Charcoal noticed and landed on her arm, almost like a bird would. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, before she addressed Jake's question. "We...had been working for a while before Runic...Lareo was defeated. Once we had no restrictions, we worked with the World Savers of Terra 4 in strengthening a town we started near the Fire Temple of their Terra. We had started a simple village, and the World Savers helped spread the word for us while they were majorly active. It has a respectable population now, though there are still those that live on their own...Once it was stable, we left to look into other Terra...It was all we had left...Looking into the Fire Human Realm here is how we learned about what Sati had done, since the Sages didn't properly fill Ignus in on what had happened here on this Terra's past. Probably due to fear of history repeating itself..."
"So...you said you've been doing this alone now? Pretending to be Ignus?" Aqua asked.
Charcoal nodded. "I...just wanted to honor what he wanted to do...He spent more of his life locked up in his temple than actually working as a Sage...I wanted...to do that for him, since he couldn't...Becuase I..." She looked like she wanted to say something big, almost like she would shed a tear or two, but then felt it would fall on deaf ears. "Besides...clearly the role of Fire Sage is looked at so poorly, that none of the other Sages even cared to see what happened after Ignus died. Or even after we left...Almost ten years since Lareo was stopped, and clearly it wasn't a priority to help us..." She looked at Aqueena. "We did what we had to, because even still after everything, we had no help..." It was like she didn't even have the energy to be angry.
Aqueena sighed. "We all were scared for our people, Charcoal...And without our leader, we tried our best to handle everything...I can't make an excuse for the time after Ignus' death...But I believe the Master Sage knew you were doing this for us, while he considered a new Sage."
"Dont get it twisted, Aqueena...I didn't do it to help the Order, or the Master...I did it for Ignus, and the people he cared about...The Order has done its fair share of wrongs towards the people of fire..." Charcoal looked to Jake. "To your people...We're sorry we couldn't handle everything, but you know of Sati, right? Ignus had a lot to work against...Or I guess...a lot to work without...Sometimes you have to do bad things to do better good things..."
Aqueena was thinking on what she would say next. Even if Ignus wanted to stop Sati, why the path to Pure Power?

"People will go to great lengths to get things done when they feel like they're all alone in the world. Even if the means is less than... savory." Jake then noted, almost anticipating Aqueena's unsaid question. "Can't say I blame him, considering he had a job to do and only one person backing him up."
Jake frowned. "Granted, the lack of communication is really the enemy here. Surely, his fellow Sages were off doing their own duties for their own people - let's get real here; how could that not be the case? What he needed was external assistance. Whether that was a Powered group in France, or maybe some government agents... There were people that would have listened to Ignus."

Aqueena nodded in agreement with Jake. "We all had our hands full once we were able to travel and see them again...As well as trying to do it on the downlow, with Lareo's forces checking in like they did...And even after Lareo was killed, we still had much to do, an without the gudience of the Master Sage until he was freed, it was far from easy. A few Sages like myself and Saria hadn't been Sages long before the imprisonment...It was tough on everyone, not just Ignus..."
"Jake makes a good point too. At least on Terra 2, there were people how could've helped you two. Kavisto has a lot of connections, and so did we." Aqua echoed Jake.
"You mean the ones were and still are mostly secret?" Charcoal asked at first. "None of your friends knew about him until after, right? We didn't know such people could've helped, and it's not like any of you would've believed him over the word of people who actively did help you."
"You don't know that." Aqua said simply.
"Well, I guess we'll never know now." Charcoal responded.

"Indeed. We'll never know. But what-ifs aren't important. What's important is that you've now finally been able to get in contact with someone that is willing to help you..." Jake then noted to Charcoal. That being said, he hadn't agreed to anything yet. But even if he ultimately didn't take on the job, he could still get Charcoal some assistance.

Charcoal seemed to take this in, considering it. Then it dawned on her why Aqueena was there, now that she calmed down. She looked at Aqueena, but her expression wasn't making it clear what emotion she was feeling. "He's it, huh? He's the next Fire Sage, isn't he?"
"He's...being considered, currently. It will depend on ultimately the Fire Elemental and Master Sage agree on, as well if he actually wants to take the role, considering the type of life he leads." Aqueena answered her.
"Hmm..." Charcoal just seemed to think for a moment. "Well...due to whats happened, a Sage from Terra 2 would best know how to help this Terra with it's problems. Me and Ignus worked our hardest on Terra's 3 and 4, but 2 has always been the problem child of these first 5 Terra...Well outside of 1. Even after we were freed, because the Terra was locked, we couldn't check on it. Locked Terra can't be entered even with the Temples, so we put our efforts elsewhere."
"You know, I was kinda thinking that. Having a new Sage more attuned to our modern age could better help bridge that gap when it comes to the culture aspect." Aqua mentioned. She then looked to Jake, looking nervous. "O-oh, no pressure or anything! I was just thinking out loud."
Aqueena sighed. "I agree, at least with myself. Some of the other Terra I look after are easier in that regard, as they don't have as big of a cultural gap as 2. It's kind've hard to justify just getting to know the modern world, when it feels like I'm just goofing off. There's a lot of work to catch up on. Though...I suppose Saria is managing with Eric well enough in that aspect."
"Wasn't it the Elemental itself that said it isn't healthy for Sages to not have social lives, Aqueena?" Aqua asked, putting Aqueena on the spot now, making her look a tad embarrassed.

"You know, when you say modern age like that, it makes me feel a bit younger, but it's not like I'm twenty or something. I'm in my 180s." Jake rubbed the back of his head. If anything, it made the others feel like grandmas, not understanding the youth of the world just because they were older folk. It wasn't like he didn't have to grow accustomed to life changing all around him multiple times during his lifetime. "Anyway. I am considering the proposal. In fact, me coming here was part of that consideration. I was not sure what I would find here, and I certainly didn't want any surprises after accepting..."

Post by Aqua on Oct 16, 2022 13:45:41 GMT -5
Aqueena laughed slightly. "Well...being disconnected from the outside world for 400 years gives you a bit of whiplash. You're younger than me, even if not by a lot, but I'd argue you've lived more of a life then myself or a Sage of less time under their belt, like Saria. 180 is quite young in the grand scheme of things...though I suppose so is 500. When it comes to powered kind, it give a different meaning to that phrase about being as old as you feel."
Charcoal didn't really care about that idle chat about age. To her, being a fairy, age was relevant. "Well, the changing of Sages was bound to happen sometime, I guess. I suppose with respect for Master Ignus' position, I can share what I know." She looked around. "It might not seem like a good place for a Temple at first, it's rather hard to find...But it's actually here because of it's connection to power. This mountain is an active volcano, so it's connection to Fire and Lava is strong. It makes the training easy, since you are so close to a natural power source. There used to be easier ways to this Temple, but a lot of that changed with the War. Fire Humans were harder to track down, as they didn't live in a massive settlement like the Water Humans did...but that made them looked at as more rogue like and dangerous in that time...So Ignus enlisted Earth Human help to make the mountain more unapproachable to those who'd do harm, and Water Humans to help provide a natural water supply here. Which is why the hot springs are in abundance here. Though, as you can see, no one has lived here for a long time. After the war, most of them moved on, not wanting to live on a mountain forever. So, there's no culture for you to upkeep with here at least. Though...it could probably do with a lot of landscape changes. With everything, Ignus wasn't concerned much for the appearance of the Temple site. The inside is still fine though, and full of power. It still has all the base functions the other Temples do."

"Huh. Well, I do feel about twenty." Jake then joked. Truth be told, he was a seasoned agent, so really, he did feel a bit older than that due to his experience.
"You have to have a balance between fortified, but easy for allies to access. That's really hard to do. You would almost need to have the volcano be able to raise and lower itself depending on times of war." Jake shook his head. That was likely impossible. "Or just come up with something like an elevator, I suppose." Landscaping, though, was something Jake didn't have much to say about. His experience was mostly in fighting. And filing paperwork. "It's a pretty useful setup here. Just needs some TLC."

"We had some tunnel systems throughout the mountain, so using our Earth and Water Human allies we managed to work that out. We had something of some earth based elevators in the tunnels, so only apposing Earth Humans could really just storm us. And since the Nature Temple was in a different part of the world, the ones around here worked closely with us. Without them, I don't think the farmlands they helped run could've been possible. We could've easily been starved out without the help we got. Though...with the wars long over, with some Earth Human assistance, the proper paths up the mountain could be restored." Charcoal then looked at Jake. "Though, I guess that depends on if you take the role, and what you plan to do if you do. Ignus may have wanted to unite our people here like he did on his home Terra, but this isn't Terra 4. Terra 2 hasn't had proper united Power cultures almost over 400 years because of humans forgetting about them."
"Hopefully it never comes to that again, since that only does us more harm. Having a place to belong and be yourself without the worry of judgement sounds good...but maybe unrealistic now." Aqua said, frowning slightly.

Jake shrugged his shoulders. "Ultimately, I wouldn't be able to tell Fire Humans what to do. But I'd gladly fix up the place so that they can take refuge here. Everyone needs that kind of place. Permanent, or temporary. That place can be here." Jake shook his head. "I'm not sure how many would take advantage of it, though. The world is a very mixed place now. Just about everyone can get help from anyone, not just fellow humans of the same affinity. It's not required."

"In the end, it's the people that will choose how they wish to live their lives. Not us. We're here to be their support, should they want it. That is ultimately our task, above anything else. If anything, jump starting cities is more of a selfish dream of my own." Aqueena commented.
"I mean, I don't find the idea selfish myself, but then it's more like where I came from too." Aqua added.
"It's possible your work might be more geared towards other Terrae. Terra 2 seems to be in an unstable time of constant transition. Establishing something that large scale would be difficult right now, for any culture. Not just water or fire humans." Charcoal said.

"Basically, I would be more inclined to check on the other Terrae. Granted, I'm already aware there isn't much left on Terra 1. I can't grow new Fire Humans from the ground, unfortunately. I guess three, four, and five would have my attention. Two isn't really doing much. But like I said, at least reestablishing this place as a safe haven would be nice." Jake noted to everyone. "But we'll see. I'd need to actually visit these places and take inventory..."

"Last I was aware, Terra 3's Fire Human culture has managed well enough. Terra 3 is mostly a desert, so Fire and Earth Humans do rather well there. Its the Water Humans who struggle more, due to a greater lack of water." Aqueena explained for Jake.
Aqua looked sad. "I'm not happy with the state of Terra 1, but...at least for now its making this transition for the Sages a little easier."
"Terra 4 is stable for the time being. Aside from 2, 4 is the most active in terms of threats, so in a way it helps keep them together. I've kept the closest eye on things there, since their culture depended on Ignus more, and were very used to his involvement in the past. For now...they are unaware of what happened...Terra 5 was Ignus' next plan of action, but once he learned of Sati and her impact on Fire Human culture on the 5 Terra, he dropped everything to try and deal with her." Charcoal explained to Jake.

Jake considered the state of the Terrae. It seemed like there would be quite a bit of work involved. Not only that, he would need time to understand how each Terra operated. It was hard enough trying to figure out how Terra 2 was held together... "A good thing. That problem is dealt with." Mostly. "Well. Charcoal. Uh. Would you be up to giving me tour of the temple?" Jake didn't seem to have any issues with her at this point in time.

While Jake seemed to accept Charcoal easily enough, she was unsure what to think of them. She started this meeting by calling them Ignus' murderers, but then opened her heart out to them to explain Ignus' truths. She held much blame for his fate and ruined reputation against The Order, as well as the fate of their people and his departed family. And she herself...a deep attatchment she had for him, severed. One she dared not speak of openly. All these things weighed on her mind when Jake asked for her assistance. But dispite her and Ignus's shared distain for The Order, Ignus still cared for his people. And they would need someone to help them without his pressence, help she couldn't provide alone. So she folded to his request, since no matter what she felt, a new Sage would be taking over. Be it Jake, or someone else. "I...suppose I can do that well enough." She then snapped her fingers, as the pile of the fake Ignus on the ground disappeared in a cloud of smoke. She then lifted off of Aqua's arm, and started flying again. "Follow me then." She started flying through the rotting away village, and into the entrence of the temple.
As they entered, while the water temple seemed to have walls of flowing water, the entry hallway was covered in many torches of a fancy looking design. The flames seemed to burn without end, in a red color. The torches must've had an unending fuel source, like fire crystals. Aqua looked at the walls, seeing the torches adorn the walls. "I almost expected lava the flow down the walls..." Aqua mumbled.
"That wouldn't be very safe. Fire Humans can control lava with training, but that wouldn't stop them from getting seriously hurt...Plus, there's enough of that around here anyway, with th volcano." Charcoal commented.

"Right. Lava is scary deadly if used. I couldn't imagine using it as a decoration." Jake grimaced a bit. "In fact, I rarely use it because it is so destructive, and very hard to clean up. No, I approve of the torches. It would be exceedingly dangerous if Non-fire Human guests were here." But, he did suppose one could make an argument for defenses during an attack. Having a flood of Lava could be somewhat helpful in crowd control. "Come to think of it, is there something in place to keep the volcano from erupting?" He assumed so.

Charcoal noddein responce to Jake's question. "The Temple itself surpresses the volcanno activity, but its still by all means active. The temple harneses the raw energy from lava for it's forge, as well as crafting powerful fire crystals. But...in times of need, the volcanno could still be triggered to erupt. The temple itself projects a barrier around itself and the inner temple grounds in case of eruption." She paused for a moment. "The hot spring lake used to be a lava lake for defence and training, but with the help of water humans and earth humans, we ran water here for the peoples sake. Though there are smaller lava release points across the mountain to lessen pressure, as well as pathing the lava back deep into the earth or other volcannos if needed."
"Wow, I never would've expected so much was happening underneath." Aqua commented.
"While not as distructive, the Water Temple has a similar system in place with water, and the re destrubtion of it. We use it often to create oases on Terra 3." Aqueen explained.
Once they reached the center room, they would find the same hallway setup as in the Water Temple, though rather than a water fountin, there was a pillar of lava in the center, flowing downwards. It seemed to be covered in a glass like covering, as it flowed through cracks in the floor, seemingly powering the temple. The same protective shielding covered it on the floor. Statues in the four corners of the room, looking like robed figures folding flames helped light the room, and each flame was one of the four fire colors.

Impressive. That was certainly the word to describe what was going on here. This temple was built with clear intention. Once they made their way to the central room, Jake whistled briefly in appreciation. Looks like there was a bit of Lava around after all. Looking around at the statues, he held up his right hand and lit four small fires, one between each finger. They were red, blue, white, and green, mirroring the statues in the room. "I assume this room is similar to the Water temple's."

"If by that, you mean the floor doubles an elevator, yes. But without the Sages Medallion, the elevator won't respond. So I'll need to do this the manual way." Charcoal said, as she lifted her arms. The four flames on the statues began to lift up, and swap places with other flames. Each of the statues actually had different colored eyes, and before the flames didn't match the eyes. They now did, as the room shook slightly. A section of the floor around the pillar opened up as a serial staircase rose up, rotating around the lava pillar in the center.
"Ah yes, the manual passageways. Always good to have backup systems in place." Aqueena said.

"It would be pretty bad if the temple was forever sealed away due to the lack of a Sage." Jake noted. It was good that there was a backup. Of course that meant there was going to be a bit of walking involved... Maybe he'd take the manual way anyways. It sounded like a good workout! Race you to the top, Trevor! He joked to himself. Trevor would probably curse his name if the stairs ended up being very long. That, and he might get dizzy. Smiling, he joyfully started his impromptu workout session.

Charcoal, not needing the stairs simply flew up the stairs, into the opening in the ceiling. The staircase extended both upwards and down, but Jake was heading up the stairs currently. As Aqua and Aqueena followed up the stairs, Aqua started to fan herself with her hand. "Ugh, normally I can handle heat fine, but climbing stairs next to a lava pillar might be pushing it..."
"Tell me about it, this robe is starting to feel like an oven..." Aqueena mumbled.
"Its not that not." Charcoal said, as they entered the first upper floor. It looked very much like the one in the water temple, filled with strange looking archways that were seemingly gateways. Some looked more worse for wear than the water temple gateways though.
