Now as Vanessa laid there on the ground and moaned, suddenly a figure came up beside her. All the souls of Purgatory were back to normal now and not even really in their area anymore. At first, Vanessa didn't even notice this figure next to her. But suddenly, the figure put its hands onto Soul Realm and they began to glow. As Soul Realm felt this, she immediately turned to look at who was seemingly healing her, at least to a degree. As the pain began to subside a bit, Vanessa got a good look at the figure. A young girl looking to be about 9 years old was looking back at her. Actually confused at this act of kindness, Soul Realm furrowed her eyebrows. "Why are you doing this?" When the girl didn't answer at first, she spoke again. "What do you want?" She asked.
Then the girl looked into Vanessa's eyes. "Wouldn't any sister want to help a sister?"
At that, Vanessa's eyes widened significantly and she sat up further. "You must be joking!" She said at first sounding almost slightly amused. I have no siblings! Only my darling children." She then squinted a bit from some leftover pain as the girl then stopped what she was doing and looked directly at Vanessa.
"You're wrong."
Vanessa's eyes now looked a little angry at being spoken to in such a manner. No child ought to speak to her this way! "What do you mean 'I'm wrong'?" She asked, however, wanting further explanation.
"You are my sister. And I am yours. We have the same mother and father." She paused. "Don't worry. I do know that you two, or rather you three, never knew..."
"Knew what?" Vanessa pushed for more. If nothing else, this conversation was certainly becoming a very interesting encounter.
"Knew that I ever even existed! When Mother went down that flight of stairs she was pregnant!"
Pregnant? Pregnant... The word echoed through Vanessa's skull and her face became momentarily expressionless with a hint of shock strewn across it.
"I was but a few weeks old at the time. She died too soon for anyone to even discover me. I died not long after she did. And this is where I ended up. Into nothingness. Lifelessness. Hopelessness..." She ended there to let Vanessa take it all in.
"So you're... one of the souls here..." Vanessa's mind was just in a state of "wow" at the moment. And now she was also more curious about this girl who claimed to be her sister. She figured she had to be telling the truth. Why else would she know about her mother falling down the stairs and dying so long ago? But there was still so much Vanessa was confused about. "So if you're just a soul here like any other, how is it that you have that healing power? And how is it that you were able to find out about the living world? About me? Other souls can't do those things..."
"Oh this?" She said referring to the power. "It isn't much. I guess they, whoever 'they' are, felt a bit sorry for us souls who never really got any sort of life at all and decided to give us some special privileges around here. I've watched you and Father's whole lives ever since that day. They weren't counting on me one day gaining an escape route because of it. And I bet your next question will be, why do I only look 9 years old? Because in some ways I'm still connected to my only living relative on earth. Once you stopped aging at 15, I would have been 9 on earth. So I stopped aging here as well."
"Wait... Only living relative?"
"I suppose it wasn't very fair of me to include Father in the lives thing before. Shortly after you ran away he took his own life. Once his only last hope had gone, what was left for him? So he landed in hell. Mother, I'm sure, went straight to heaven; no surprise there. And you know about me. And you? I suppose you could say you chose a fourth fate yourself in a way. I know many who would call you unliving and yet in none of the three traditional destinations."
Vanessa nodded slowly to all this, just trying to put it all together in her mind. She knew what her sister had said about where their mother went was completely wrong, unfortunately. But she decided not to bother with that right now. For one, it would throw off the conversation, and for another, it pained Vanessa deeply to think about it... Then she remembered something else her sister had said to her. "Wait. Escape route?"
This is when her sister's face seemed to brighten. "Yes! That's you, don't you see? I want you to take me in as one of your souls for now. Just to get me out of this wretched place. Of course, that certainly won't be the end of it. We'll find a way to free me for good eventually and-"
"Wait. Why should I?" Soul Realm said in a stubborn manner.
"Why? Why because you owe it to me now! And because we're sisters and that's what sister's do."
Soul Realm was silent for a moment. She thought it over. She didn't even know she had a sister until just a few minutes ago. But in reality, the thought of her having a sister now was beginning to fill her with a strange emotion she wasn't sure she'd ever felt before. She didn't know exactly what to call it. All she knew is that it made her feel good. This could be the one someone since her mother who might finally, actually love her for who she really is and not just try to exploit her or kill her or damage her or even die on her! A sister! Is this what a sister felt like?
Slowly, Vanessa put her hand out and then grasped her sister's. "What's your name?"
"They gave me the name Trinity." Her gray eyes blinked and she brushed back a bit of her medium gray-toned hair. In fact, even her skin was a pale gray. She had never really had the chance to have these feature's defined in life as most do. So she was generally undefined in this place as well.
"Trinity." Vanessa said. "Let us go." Soul Realm now had the strength to stand and soon enough a portal opened up for them. "I will take you into myself for now." And Trinity was taken into Soul Realm just before she stepped through the portal, exiting Purgatory, the place where she had lost... and won...
