Meanwhile, rather than passing on, Ponic would find himself standing in a small, simple stone chamber, with no doors or windows in site. In front of him, at the centre of the room, was a stone pedestal which came up to just below table height; on it was a chess board, with the pieces set up in mid-game. There were two wooden chairs, one in front of Ponic, the other on the opposite side of the chess board. Seated in the latter was a man. He was covered from head to toe in thick, white robes, except for his hands and feet, which were wrapped in rough, woolen bandages, and his face, over which he wore a dull, silver death mask, with holes for just his eyes and nostrils. He was staring intently at the chess game, head resting on his hand; with the other hand, he gestured to the empty chair and commanded in a soft, slightly throaty voice, "Sit."
