[Cindy's character] [Fourth Thread] [6/11/14] [Page 1,372] [Post clrp.proboards.com/post/55908/thread ]
(Brother to Frieda Bauer)
Rainer looked out the window, watching the green of trees whiz by and listening to the lull of the clacking wheels over train tracks. It was about a 10 hour train ride from France into Germany, and he was admittedly a little anxious about being back there. He hadn't been in Germany since... What was it.. 1956? So that would make it 58 years about.. it had been more than half a century, it had been more than half his life.
As the train pulled into the station, he looked around. Some things had changed, there were more ads everywhere, stuff like that, but some of the old architecture remained. He stepped onto the platform and caught his reflection in the tinted window of a train car. He didn't look a day older from the day he left. His pale gray, almost white-blonde looking hair was replaced with a deep black, only a streak of his old pale gray color showed in a tuft in the space above his left temple and left eye. His once pale gray eyes were now a deep black as well. Somehow it made him look.. older somehow. Usually people went from dark hair to gray, but he was a different story.
He walked along the streets of the city, not because he couldn't get a cab or particularly enjoyed walking, but because it was strange for him to be walking these streets again, he felt as though he were in a dream, or an alternate reality. He still couldn't believe he was actually here.. he hoped that she would be more pleasantly than unpleasantly surprised. He had no idea how she would react, he hadn't seen her in nearly 70 years. More recently, that had been bothering him. For years he'd been wishy washy and back and forth on what to do about it, but there was no putting it off any longer. He'd thought that maybe he should write to announce he was coming, but eventually just decided that he would just show up in person instead. After all these years, he'd still never forgotten the date.
After checking into his room in a nearby motel where he dropped off luggage, Rainer Bauer made his way down the familiar yet also unfamiliar street. Almost everything was different, except the location, and the name on the street sign: Muhlgasse. He slowly walked down the street until he stood before a quaint little house with the numbers "616" on the door. He walked up to the door, fist raised as if to knock, and hesitated. It's already evening, maybe I should just wait until first thing in the morning..
