That did the trick. A soft click was heard and the bookcase slid into the floor, revealing a door. But it didn't have a handle. "Ugh. We solve one riddle and we're presented with another." There was a rather interesting thing on the door where the handle would be. It reminded Skylos of a scanner in the grocery store. "Any ideas?" he said, examining the scanner-like device.

Masamune frowned as he peered at the scanner in thought. "Hm..." After a few moments, he suggested, "Try holding that compass against it or something." It was the only idea he could think of.

Skylos nodded. "That's the best idea I've heard. I can't think of anything else to do." Skylos held the compass interface to the scanner. There was a beep, just like a scanner would do, and then the door slid into the wall. A small room was in the back, with a table with a single book on it. The compass was pointing to it.

Masamune glanced as Caleb. "Looks like we've found are treasure," he observed, taking a step into the room towards the book.

Skylos walked in and the compass was now blue. The 'minute lines' around the face of the compass blinked red, and then the compass interface closed. "Indeed!" He said cheerfully. He shuffled through some of the pages, looking for the line of runes.

A thought crossed Masamune's mind. "Hold on," he pointed out. "Won't we need Halo to read these runes for us?"

Skylos froze in mid page turn. The thought hadn't even occured to him. "Ah... We do. Hm." He looked down and saw that he happened to have turned to the page with the phrase. "Well...I already know what the phrase is. Perhaps we don't need her?" He was uncertain. It showed in his voice.

Masamune frowned, then shrugged. "Well, we may as well try. What's the worse that could happen?" Although the question was meant to be rhetorical and carefree, there was an edge of seriousness in it.

Skylos gave a tiny grin and then recited what Halo had said a week ago. "A time that has past, a time that is now, a time that is to come." There seemed to be power in the words, unfortunately, nothing happened. Skylos frowned. "Hmm..."

"Bugger," cursed Masamune, clearly disappointed. Scuffing heels, he walked back towards the entrance a little. "So, shall we take it with us?"

Skylos thought about it. "Well. Yes. It would probably be better to take it with us. Like you said... We wouldn't want anyone like Yamiken finding it. I should be able to sneak it out easily..." Skylos tried picking it up, but it wouldn't budge. "Now what?!" he tugged, but it still wouldn't move an inch.

Masamune rolled his eyes. "Great. What is it about books of power and having to stay in one place?" he grumbled. He sighed impatiently. "What do we do now?"

Skylos sighed. "But this is strange. I could move the other book." Skylos then remembered something else. "Oh yeah. I just remembered. On the back of my watch is a phrase that appeared there when it started going haywire. Maybe the phrase works the same as the one Halo said..." He took his watch off and turned it around so he could read it.

Masamune turned back, wondering if this new development would prove the key to the puzzle.

Skylos shrugged and recited, "Time is relative." he said brightly. The book glowed with much intensity and the familar rift appeared. Skylos could see it this time since he was expecting it. It looked like a long tunnel. They would then be sucked in.

"Yargh!" yelled Masamune as he was sucked through the rift. This being his first time, he hadn't been expecting it in the slightest.

Luckly, Skylos didn't land face-first into a beach this time. No...they had landed in a city this time. They were outside and the city looked much...different. It didn't look old at all...It seemed more... "Futureristic? I figured we'd only go back in time..." he frowned. He would know nothing from this era.

"Ha! Joke's on you!" Masamune grinned as he shakily stumbled to his feet. "Now we're both behind the times on technology!"

Skylos grimaced at Masamune. "Technology is not what I'm worried about! It's history!" He paced slightly. "T-that other book. It said World War III on it if you remember. That has yet to happen. What if that is what we're about to face?" He bit his lip.

Masamune frowned worriedly. "Hm... fair point... I've spent my whole life in war, but from what I've read since coming back, your wars tend to be a lot bloodier than ours were..." He glanced around. "Well, maybe it's not so bad. Maybe we'll actually have a chance to prevent the war."

Skylos then stopped and looked at Masamune. "That's it, ya know. You're exactly right." Skylos was dead serious. "Last time I went back in time to fix a problem which would have destoryed history... Well this is the same... Just in the future. Now I suggest we catch up on the history we've missed..." He raised an eyebrow. "Whatever year it is."

"Right," agreed Masamune, now all business. "Well, one thing I learned last time I found myself in a different time was that libraries are your friend. Free newspapers would help us a lot here, for instances. And where better to learn about recent history than a place filled with books?" He considered. "In fact, if we're lucky we'll even find free internet."

Skylos nodded. "I like this plan. Now we just need to find a library." Then Skylos grimaced again. "Oh no. What if they all speak Spanish like last time? I really don't know much of it...Only my native French..." Wit hthat being said, Skylos's watched beeped. "Hm?" He looked down and saw that the digital clock was going haywire. The clock hands of the analogue part seemed to be going in circles as well.

"What's it doing?" asked Masamune curiously, peering at the watch. "Did it do something like this last time as well?"
|
|
|

Skylos shook his head. "No. It didn't start going haywire until we returned back to the present." The digits stopped at 2154 AD. Skylos raised an eyebrow. "That's a year." He poked at his watch. The time now being showed by the clock hands matched the time they had just come from. "This is promising... A yearometer."

Masamune nodded. "Maybe this'll be a little less bumpy than your last ride, then," he mused. "So, 150 years, more or less, then..." He winked. "Not too shabby a time to hold World War 3 off for, considering the situation in the Middle East back in your time."

Skylos then pointed out. "Ah. But we've been put here maybe hours before World War III. So we need to hurry to a library!" the watch beeped again and a holo map came out with a red dot blinking on a building. The center appeared to be where they currently were. "Mm. Much easier it seems."

"Can I get one of those do you think?" joked Masamune, starting off in the direction the map indicated.

It seemed to act just like GPS. "Hmm. Who knows? Maybe if you come with me on another trip and bring a watch with you, then maybe it'll turn into one like mine. Of course you might not want to go another trip after this one." he grinned. He walked up the metalic stairs and opened the door to the library. "Strange...I haven't seen a single person the whole time we've been here..."

"That's rarely a good sign," muttered Masamune darkly. "Better hurry." He strode through the door and paused there, letting his eyes adjust to the new light level.
