[Continuing on from the last one. This takes place after "The First Book" and before the trip to the love demon realm.]
It had been a week since Halo and Skylos's little time trip. As far as Skylos could tell, there hadn't been any time issues. He looked around for time books, but he never could find any. The mysterious compass never appeared again either... Well... Today that would change.
Skylos sat quietly in his room. His head was on his desk. "Mmph... Bored..."

"That looks uncomfortable," said Masamune, strolling in casually, hands in his coat pockets giving the room his usual precusory glance.

Skylos nearly jumped. His head had snapped up and he stared before remembering that Masamune was here now. "Ah. Masamune. You nearly gave me a heart attack." he grinned.

Masamune just raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn't stop paying attention, then," he remarked dryly. He then squinted, hunched over slightly and started talking in mocking imitation of an old sensei, wagging his finger at Caleb. "Always pay attention to your surroundings, young grasshopper, or one day you shall... erm..." He slapped back into his normal posture and tone. "... meet a... sticky end... most surely?" He grimaced at the poor end to his improvisation.

Skylos chuckled and answered in a mocking tone. His eyebrows went up slightly as he smirked, "Aye Sensei." He pushed his chair back and then rose from his chair. He scooted it under the desk. "So Masamune, what have you been up to since we got back?" Skylos figured it was probably more interesting than what he had been up to...Other than exactly a week ago when he and Halo had gone on a little trip in time.

"Winding down," the one-eyed man chuckled. "Saving the world is all well and good, but sometimes I just want to sit back and relax." He stretched his arms above his head. "What about you?"

"I've been going to the library a lot lately... It seems that I've been only able to think about reading since we've gotten back. There are some pretty interesting books down in the basement. I went with Halo last week and found that she could actually read one of the books with some old runes in them. I'm not surprised though. They were called Time Runes anyways. She's part Time Demon." Skylos then stopped talking...or rather blathering. His answer was much longer than need-be.

Masamune raised an eyebrow, sensing this wasn't the whole story. "Uh huh... so, anything come of that?" he asked a tone to match.

Skylos opened his mouth, but then paused. Should he tell Masamune that he jumped back in time to 1492? The idea of it sounded mad, just thinking about it. He decided that there were stranger things that they've seen, so time travel couldn't be that weird. "Well. Halo read a phrase that was all by itself at the bottom of the page...and we suddenly found ourselves on a beach." His face reddened slightly. This still would sound weird. "Er...We found that we had gone back in time...to where the book had described." He stopped, not wanting to throw everything at once at Masamune.

Masamune's eyes widened. "Time travel?" he asked, awe in his voice. "What... I mean... how... I mean..." He mouth worked furiously as he tried to make himself stop fumbling questions. Finally, he asked, "What happened then?"

Skylos chuckled slightly and was reinforced in his courage of relating the story. "Ah. Well we traveled around for a bit, and I then found an arrow in a tree. I used my aura tracking ability and found the owner. But Halo and I were weary of whom that might be." He then decided to skip the part of where he sparred with Halo. "It started raining and the aura started moving away pretty fast. We followed and found...Well a colony. Of course we didn't speak Spanish fluently, so we really didn't know what the guard was saying, but he let us in. Halo and I came to the conclusion that we had arrived in time before the disaster that was described in the book happened. The "disaster" happened to turn out to be a Dark Human from even further in the past. We made work of him, and were surprised when he turned into a demon. We trapped him in a capture orb and that guard took him. The guard was some sort of time traveler or something and he sent us back. No time had past." He stopped for a breath then continued. "My watch started acting up when the book's text changed and rewrote itself. I have some sort of compass on my watch now...and nothing has happened for a week." He finished.

"That sounds... complicated," Masamune said in reply, grimacing slightly. "So... this time travel thing... you can only travel back to times and places you have Time Runes from or something like that?"

Skylos frowned. "Well I'm not sure. That's the only book with the Time Runes in it that I've seen. I've checked many more books this week...But none of them contain time runes. I'm wondering if that was the only one...Though I was given that compass... Perhaps there are more, but they can only be found at certain times."

"Mmhm," Masamune hummed in understanding. "Probably just as well. Imagine if people like Yamiken got their hands on something like that?"

Skylos shuddered. "Ugh...I don't want to think about it..." The next thing that happened really did make Skylos jump. His watch that usually would have blinked indiglo (woo, Timex) was now blinking red, and beeping (which was the only normal part). Skylos looked at his watch and pressed the center button to turn the alarm off. It did, and then the holographic compass materialized. The minute hand was circling around, trying to find its "north". "This is...The compass I was talking about!" He was shocked.

Masamune peered at it intently. "So I guess we follow it, then?" he suggested somewhat slowly, clearly as shocked by this latest development as Skylos.

"...Yes." he decided as the compass finally stopped and fixed on some location. "Hm. I wonder how far away the book is?" Skylos asked to himself as he filed out of the room and to the front door, where he this time smartly grabbed his Light Robe.

Masamune shrugged. "Beats me. I don't know how this thing works any better than you do," he answered, even though he knew the question had been rhetorical. He walked briskly after Caleb, hands by his sides now rather than in his pockets.

As Skylos exited the cabin (which happened to be the opposite way than the compass was pointing to), the interface of the compass turned red. Skylos stopped and raised an eyebrow. He took one step back and it turned back to orange, which he had just now noticed was the color. He snapped his fingers. "Ah. I bet the color will change, based on how close we are...But that's only an assumption. It might have just been warning me that I was going the wrong way..." He walked around the cabin so that they were now going the right way. Again, it led to the city.

"'All roads lead to Rome'," Masamune quoted bemusedly as he saw where the compass as leading them. "Seems everything around here ends up in this city at some point."

Skylos smiled. "Indeed. But the compass is not pointing towards library at all. Actually...It seems to me that we're heading towards City Hall." he scratched his head. "Yeah... I'm sure there are many books in the goverment buildings." The compass had now turned a dark yellow. "Ever been on a treasure hunt?" He chuckled.

"Some of us are too busy deciding the future of the country to have time for that sort of thing," shot back Masamune self-righteously, before his expression broke into a grin once more and he nodded. "Yes, when I was young, but only once or twice." He grimaced. "In the end, I really didn't have that much time for that sort of thing."

Skylos chuckled in response. "Yes. I see how time would have been precious back then. I've never been much of an outdoors person...so treasure hunts weren't really my thing. Though this certianly takes the cake." They crossed at a cross-walk. "We'll have to zig-zag a bit."

"Well, at least we know where we're going," reasoned Masamune, following Caleb's lead. He'd spent a bit of time in the city before and could probably find his way to city hall, but he didn't doubt that Caleb knew the place far better than he did.

Skylos nodded. "Yes. I just love knowing where I'm headed. I hate wandering around aimlessly. Though once we go through time, I don't know if the compass will do anything." They arrived at City Hall, which was a series of buildings. Skylos smiled. "Oh I see. We're going to one of the federal book reserves. They have the kind of books you can look at, but not check them out. How clever." The compass was green now as he walked into the building.

"It shouldn't be. We just need to read the book to use it." Skylos stopped in front of a bookcase. The compass was in the process of turning blue, but it didn't finish. "I don't think it's on this shelf." he frowned because the only thing behind the bookcase was the wall it was up against. "I suppose they're might be a room behind the bookcase...But doesn't that only happen in the movies?"

"Only one way to find out," Masamune declared decisively. He began to feel his way along the books on one of the shelves, searching for one which didn't feel right.

Skylos decided to search at the bottom of the shelves since he was shorter than Masamune. "Let's just hope the book isn't on the opposite side of the reserve." Skylos read the spines of the books as he examined them. Revolutionary War, Civil War, War of 1812, World War I, World War II, World War III, The Crusades, The--. Skylos blinked as he went back a few books. "World War III?" he inquired. He tried to pull it out, without success. "I think it's this one."

Masamune saw the one he was referring to and crouched down to examine it. "So... how does this usually work in the movies?" he grinned. He too tried to pull it out with as little success, then instead tried pushing it in.
